Please remove any basketball hoops that are near the roadway and in or near the public right of way. These hoops may be damaged during snow removal and leaf removal if they are not relocated. The Borough is not responsible for damage of anything in the public right of way.

Spring has arrived!!! Please keep in mind when cleaning leaves from yards not to rake the leaves and yard waste into the gutters that lead to the storm drain area. When it rains, these areas can become blocked. We are asking that you bag these items as our next leaf pick up will not be until the fall. Thank you for your assistance in keeping Clarks Summit a beautiful place to live.

For information on recycling please go to: http://recycling.lackawannacounty.org/home.htm Leaves, grass clippings, flowers and wood chips are all accepted at no cost at the Lackawanna County Recycling Center compost site located at 200 Adams Ave. in Scranton. Brush, branches, yard clippings, and logs up to 8 inches in diameter are accepted at a fee. Please recycle to save precious resources.

The Clarks Summit Borough is now able to recycle your unbroken compact fluorescent light bulbs. A container is available in the Borough Building at 304 S. THREE DIGIT "CALL BEFORE YOU DIG" TELEPHONE NUMBER
As warmer weather allows borough residents to begin more outdoor projects, the 8-1-1 abbreviated dialing system is being launched. Residents can dial 8-1-1 to make certain underground utility lines are marked before digging 18 inches or deeper. The 8-1-1 telephone number is an abbreviated system for calling the PA One Call System, which homeowners and contractors are required to call at least three business days before beginning any digging or excavation project. Before digging begins, PA One Call System contacts the utility company, who will then mark the locations of lines with either paint or flags. The free service allows residents to learn the location of utility lines before digging begins, making do-it-yourself projects much safer for both those who dig and the surrounding neighborhood. CORRUGATED CARDBOARD & RECYCLING BINS

The Borough maintains a dumpster at the DPW facility at 308 Davis Street for residents and businesses to use to recycle cardboard. All boxes must be flattened prior to placement in the dumpster. PLEASE DO NOT PLACE CARDBOARD ON THE GROUND OUTSIDE THE DUMPSTER!

Recycling bins, for residential use, can be obtained at the Borough Office during business hours. Those hours are Monday - Friday from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. You can mix cans, glass, and plastic bottles. Please rinse out bottles and jars. Labels can stay on. Please remove lids. Newspapers, old phone books, catalogs, magazines can be collected and placed into a brown bag or tied with a cotton string and placed at the curb for pickup. The Borough conducted street sweeping from Monday, April 14 through Friday, April 25. Thank you for your cooperation.

Adopt A Tree: A message for all residents of Clarks Summit Borough and surrounding communities. Federal and State funds are no longer available for municipalities regarding the removal of dead and diseased trees. Nor are funds available for replanting of young trees after removal. The Clarks Summit Shade Tree Commission was formed in August of 2006. Funding had ceased prior to this date. With the limited funds available we were able to remove 16 dead and/or diseased trees within the Borough. There are in excess of 100 trees, which should be removed, but we cannot proceed. Planting of fresh, young trees is extremely important for our generation, but perhaps more important for future generations. We would be pleased to place your name, or that of a loved one, on a personalized, brass marker to be inserted near the newly planted tree. Thank you. Painting/Watercolor classes at the Waverly Community House

Beginning Thursday, May 8, 2008 The Waverly Community House located at 1115 N. Abington Rd. will host two six week painting/watercolor classes with instructor Maggie Salusti. The classes will be held on Thursdays in the Scout Room. The morning class for adults will take place from 10:30am until 12:00noon. The afternoon class, from 3:30 to 5pm is designed for aspiring student artists grade 6 and above. Registration is $50.00 for the six week session. Waverly Waddle

Saturday, May 10. 5K Walk/Run. Registration is from 8:00am to 8:45am on the back lawn of the Waverly Community House. The race will begin at 9:00am. Official registration includes number, S.O.A.R. Chronomix verified time, and eligibility awards. If you register by April 30th, the fees are $12.00 for adults and $6.00 for participants 12 years and under. Family registration (family of four) is $35.00 the day of the race of $30.00 in advance. Jon-Jon's Children's Arthritis Network Carnival

Monday to Friday, May 12-17th 300 block of Bedford Street, Clarks Summit. Monday and Tuesday hand stamp nights! Rides 6:30 to closing. Rides, raffles for resorts and day spa trips, games, crafts, food and more! Carnival rides by Montana Brother's Amusements. Carnival to benefit Camp JRA and the Arthritis Foundation. Scranton Tennis Club Open House

Saturday, May 17, 2008 from 10am to 3pm at the Scranton Tennis Club 1029 Morgan Highway in Clarks Summit. Pro Joe McNulty will be on hand to answer questions about his weekly junior clinics and adult lessons, as well as his junior tennis camp, which will be held in late June. The Salvation Army Annual Dinner

Wednesday, May 21, 2008 Annual Civic Dinner at the Raddisson Hotel in Scranton. Reception will begin at 6:30pm followed by dinner at 7pm. Commissioner Michael J. Washo will be receiving the Community Support Award for his outstanding contributions to the people of Lackawanna County. Rosemary Broderick, A Salvation Army Advisory Board member, will also be receiving the Community Support Award for her personal and business support of the local Salvation Army. Everyone is welcome. Memorial Day Parade

Monday, May 26, 2008 starting at 11:00am. The Abington Memorial Post 7069, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will sponsor the annual Memorial Day Parade in Clarks Summit Borough. Abington Relay for Life 2008

Saturday May 31st from 3pm to Sunday June 1st at 7am at the Abington Heights High School Track located on Noble Road. The Relay for life is a fun filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of your American Cancer Society. During the event, teams gather and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.
